Lower Makefield Township
Yardley Borough

William Yardley bought approximately 500 acres from William Penn in 1682. He called his settlement "Prospect Farm", and lived there until his premature death from smallpox in 1693.

A nephew, Thomas Yardley, settled in the area in 1704 and later started a ferry line which crossed to New Jersey.  The Yardley family occupied the land for over 150 years.

Makefield Township was one of the five original townships of Bucks County and dates back to 1692.  Forty-five years later the northern portion was split off to form Upper Makefield and Lower Makefield was born.

Throughout its history, Lower Makefield was largely devoted to farming.  The Township adopted its first Comprehensive Township Master Plan in 1954 to ensure  the orderly growth of the Township and preserve its quality of life.
